The company is named after the founder’s expedition with a Kyoto University research group to study the Rolwaling Bedingna.

About Rolwaling Trek

Rolwaling Trek specializes in crafting custom-designed trips for individuals ranging from experienced climbers to those seeking a serene immersion in nature.

The name “Rolwaling” was selected to honor the sacred Rolwaling Gaurishanker mountain and the surrounding region. Our founding team initially explored this area to study the potential impact of an overflow from Tsho Rolpa Lake on human settlements. During this expedition, the team discovered the area’s remote and underdeveloped nature, alongside its pristine beauty.

Additionally, our initial teams were recruited from the local community and remain an integral part of the Rolwaling Trek team today.

A Family in

We wanted to share how deeply the values of Rotary are ingrained in our family. Our involvement began when my father first introduced me to a polio event, where I volunteered to administer drops. Since then, we have actively sought opportunities to introduce our family, including our daughters and grandsons, to the work and principles of Rotary.

Mr. Udaya Gartaula, our CEO, truly embodies these principles. He served as Past President (2016-2017) of the Rotary Club of Kathmandu West and as Assistant Governor (2023-2024) for Rotary International District 3292. He continues to collaborate with Rotary clubs globally on community service initiatives, viewing his professional career as “an extension of our Legacy.”

As Mr. Gartaula states, “The Four-Way Test that my father taught me drives my core values of service, fellowship, diversity, integrity, and leadership. It’s about changing the world for the better. I am a firm believer that we all are put on this earth for a reason, and service to others is part of that reason.”

Udaya Gartaula returned to Nepal to take on a key role in managing and overseeing the family business after spending almost a decade in Japan.

Udaya brings a wealth of experience and a distinguished background. An alumnus of St. Paul’s School Darjeeling, he holds the unique distinction of being the first Nepali recipient of a Gold Medal from the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. Following his early aspirations to become a pilot, he pursued higher education in Japan, gaining a fluent understanding of the language and a deep appreciation for its culture.

Over the past two decades, Udaya has mastered the intricacies of our business operations, focusing on enhancing the personalized services we provide to every individual who travels with Rolwaling Trek. He continues to share his passion for flying and aviation, whether for aerial sightseeing of the Himalayas or taking a helicopter ride to Base camp—he is always sitting next to you.

Beyond his business acumen, Udaya is an accomplished mountaineer who often organizes and leads summit expeditions. We are confident that Udaya’s leadership and commitment will further strengthen our mission to offer exceptional travel experiences.
