Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is a famous Himalayan route that passes across Nepal’s eastern region and is one of the scenic trekking destination in Nepal.The third-highest peak in the world, Kanchenjunga (8586m), is also known as the “Five Treasures of the Great Snow” (Gold, Silver, Precious Stones, Grain, and Holy Scriptures).

The famous Kanchenjunga is located in North-East Nepal and is bordered by Sikkim, India. Kanchenjunga can be viewed from India, Bhutan, and Tibet due to the mountain’s location in Nepal and India. Along the way, you’ll pass remote Tibetan communities higher up in the semi-arid plateaus at the base of the mountain and lush, green, semi-tropical Rai and Limbu settlements in the middle of the slopes.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek Route

The Kanchenjunga trek begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Taplejung, from where you will be walking to Chirwa, where you will stay for a night. The walk will continue to Sukethum, Gyabla, and Ghunsa, where you will stay for a night at each place. After that, you will trek to Kambachen, Lhonak, and Kanchenjunga Base Camp.

You will stay at the base camp for 2 nights to hike near Glacier Kanchenjunga, Kumbhakarna viewpoint.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek Highlights

  • Follow the glacier torrents of the Tamur and Ghunsa rivers to their source on the Kanchenjunga Himal’s northwestern side.
  • Witness breathtaking views of the Kanchenjunga massif, the Makalu range, and nearby peaks.

  • Visit the monastery and a few smaller monasteries illustrating Tibetan architecture and culture in the hamlet of Ghunsa.
  • The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, which encompasses an area of 2035 square kilometers, is one of the trek’s significant highlights. The site is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna and species, such as Himalayan black bears, musk deer, snow leopards, red pandas, wild boars, and many others.
  • Trek through remote Gurung, Limbu, Rai, and Sherpa neighborhoods and witness the authentic Himalayan lifestyle and hospitality.

**NOTE: We can customise this trek, taking the same route, but minimising the number of days. The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is possible via road as well. The journey by road is little longer and may take upto 15 days.We can customize your itinerary accordingly.

 Autumn and spring are often considered the ideal seasons for the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek. In these seasons, the temperature is reasonable, and the weather is also quiet and constant. In these seasons, sunny skies are often expected, and woodlands are also gorgeous owing to fall foliage and spring wildflower blooming.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek Difficulty

The Kanchenjunga base camp trek  is regarded as a difficult trek that requires a high level of physical fitness, endurance, and mental strength. You will be climbing at elevations of over 5,000 meters (16,404 feet), in thin air with unpredictable weather. You’ll be trekking over difficult and hilly terrain, with long descents and ascents, river crossings, and winding paths. You’ll also regularly spend many hours a day walking in distant and isolated spots.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek Permit

The Kanchenjunga trek permit is one of the most expensive in Nepal. The trekkers need to secure special permissions because it is a restricted region. You’ll need a Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project Entry Permit (KCAP) and a Restricted Area Entry Permit. The Tapethok and Yamphuding VDC routes are restricted zones.

Entry Permit for Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project (KCAP): Rs 2000 per person

Restricted Zone cost of an entry permit is USD 20 per person, per week.
