BARUNTSE EXPEDITION
Known for stunning views and a good summiting success rate
EX#505.
Baruntse Expedition Overview
Baruntse Peak is one of the most beautiful peaks in the Everest region. With a high altitude of 7,162m in the center of the Khumbu region, the Baruntse expedition is a comparatively easy peak climbing with similar heights. Baruntse is one of Nepal’s glorious peaks with a large, symmetrical snow mountain with four ridges and summits.
The Barun-Tse peak is located in the western part of the Barun Glacier Valley, with the Hunku Glacier to the south and the Imja Glacier to the northwest. Mt. Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, and the Mera Peak continue to engulf Baruntse. You can enjoy the incredible panoramic views of the Himalayan range from the highest peak.
Crowned by four peaks, Baruntse has four routes that lead to the summit, with the South route being the most popular. On the other hand, the Southeast ridge path is difficult since it is a simple climb that passes through steep areas of an ice cliff that climbs up to 50 degrees and poses the risk of avalanches.
On May 30, 1954, Colin Todd and Geoff Harrow of the Expedition team commanded by Sir Edmund Hillary successfully ascended Baruntse Peak for the first time. Mt. Baruntse is a stunning mountain to prepare for an 8000-meter peak, with a better success rate than other summits over 7000 meters.
Baruntse Expedition route
There are two major Baruntse expedition routes. The first route leads from Lukla to Zwatra La Pass, then to Mera La Pass, which leads to Hunku Glacier and the Base Camp. The alternate way navigates the West Barun Glacier via the Makalu Trail. You will be captivated by the region’s pure beauty and peacefulness, whichever way you pick—walking through historic Sherpa towns, lush meadows, and a high pass with magnificent views of the Khumbu region’s high mountain peaks
Best Season for Baruntse Peak Expedition
The spring season, particularly March-May, is ideal for Mt. Baruntse expeditions. The temperature progressively shifts from cold to warm during the spring season. Climbers will have little difficulty acclimatizing in these shifting conditions. Furthermore, climbers may practice and train in higher camps without difficulty.
Aside from spring, a tiny window of September-November in autumn is also favorable for Mt. Baruntse expeditions. The autumn season follows the rainy monsoons. During the autumn season, there are fewer chances of rain and avalanches. Dashain and Tihar, two holy holidays, also happen during autumn.
The Baruntse expedition requires excellent physical fitness and prior experience with high-altitude trekking. Acclimatization will be highly beneficial in making the journey memorable and successful.
