Trip Overview

The Khumbu region, also called the Everest region, is where nature lovers and mountaineering enthusiasts go to marvel at many of the world’s highest mountains. Located in north-eastern Nepal, the region houses two national parks – the Sagarmatha National Park (a UNESCO world heritage site) and Makalu-Barun National Park. Altitudes in the area range from 3,300m all the way to the summit of Mount Everest at 8,848m.
A geographically isolated area due to the gigantic mountain peaks surrounding it, the Khumbu region first started to get significant human settlements in the 1500s. This was when the Sherpa ethnic group arrived and established trade routes between Nepal and Tibet. Nowadays, many of the trails used by trekkers are still the same paths walked on by merchants and their mules hundreds of years ago.
The main routes in the Khumbu valley take visitors through remote valleys, charming villages and high mountain passes. All the while you will find yourself spellbound by the glittering peaks soaring up into the sky everywhere you look.
Sagarmatha National Park contains eight mountains exceeding 7,000m as well as diverse fauna and flora. While sightings of large animals in the park are not very common, you might see Himalayan tahr, musk deer and maybe even the elusive snow leopard.

  • Skilled climbers can test their mettle as they cross snow slopes with crevasses and small seracs
  • From the summit, climbers are rewarded with breathtaking vistas including Ama Dablam (6,812m), Thamserku (6,608m), Kusum Kanguru (6,367m) and Cho Oyu (8,188m)
  • Spending a night in Thame, a historic Sherpa village that has been home to some of Nepal’s greatest mountaineers, such as Apa Sherpa, Kami Rita Sherpa and Tenzing Norgay
  • Going through high plateaus surrounded by soaring peaks, where yaks and other livestock graze in the warmer months

Day 1. Fly Kathmandu → Lukla → Phadking – approx. 3 hours

Night stay in Kathmandu

Day 2 & 3. Trek Phakding → Namche Bazaar – approx. 5- 6 hours

Spend 2 nights here for acclimatization

Day 4. Trek Namche Bazaar → Thame – approx. 4 hours

1 night stay

Day 5. Trek Thame → Thengbo – approx. 4.5 hours

1 night stay

Day 6 & 7. Trek Thengbo → Base Camp – approx. 3.5 hours

Spend 2 nights here for acclimatization.

Day 8. Trek Base Camp → High Camp – approx. 5 hours

1 night stay in base camp

Day 9. High Camp → Summit → High Camp – approx. 7 hours in total

1 night stay in high camp

Day 10. High Camp → Base Camp – approx. 2 hours

1 night stay

Day 11. Base Camp → Thengo – approx. 2.5 hours

Stay one night in Thengo

Day 12. Fly Thengo → Kathmandu

  • If an area does not have good quality accommodation options, we can provide very comfortable camping-style accommodation for the duration of your journey.
  • Rolwaling also has a team of cooks who specialise in making Japanese cuisine, using authentic ingredients from Japan.
  • A lot of the fresh produce used in our dishes is sourced locally from growers in the trekking region.
